三个阶段
其次，从初高中英语水平到达海外大学英语所需水平，英语学习者需要经历三个阶段：“正确”、“变化”、“逻辑”。
正确英语应用的正确：
好比学做菜，先保证做出能吃的菜，可能就一道西红柿炒鸡蛋，没有怪味，没有烧焦就行。针对目标为雅思6分或托福80分左右的学生，能力培训的重点应该是“正确”，包括正确理解和使用词汇、搭配、语法和句子结构等等。
变化英语应用的变化：
西红柿炒鸡蛋做熟了，吃腻了，证明需要提高了。这时候就看是不是要会做肉菜、凉菜。或者，同样是西红柿，能用不同的做法，做出变化，让人感觉灵活多样。针对目标为雅思6.5分或托福90分左右的学生，能力培训的重点应该是“变化”。在这个阶段，教师会训练学生同义词汇替换、转换语法形式和更换句子结构等能力。
逻辑英语应用的逻辑：
不谈做菜，就说讲话。有的人能用10句把一个事讲清楚，有的人只用5句，有的人只用3句。这是思维方面的差异。讲10句的人，有大量的口水话、车轱辘话，甚至包括思维发散后的瞎扯。有人读书，读完一段文字后能总结出1、2、3点；有人却读完之后感觉囫囵吞枣，不知所云。后者是因为在英语应用状态下思维混乱，逻辑模糊。
去除这些毛病，是进入更高级语言水平的必经之路。针对目标为雅思7分或托福100分左右的学生，能力培训的重点应该是“逻辑”。这个阶段的学生水平已基本达到中级英语。教师会重点训练学生掌握英文逻辑的能力，包括句句之间的衔接、论证的逻辑思路等等。
小结：三个阶段虽在某些时间内会互有交叉，但总体而言是清晰的语言习得发展体系，遵循着语言习得的基本规律，符合人的认知习惯，是最稳健、最高效的“捷径”。新航道的课程体系即按照此三个阶段进行设计。
如果孩子英语不好，留学英国能跟的上么?
一般来说，收到一个学校的录取通知书，代表学校认可孩子的能力，语言上应该也不会有很大障碍。刚进入大一的时候课业难度会比较小，是个很好的适应过程。
刚到英国可能语言上会有一些不适应，包括课堂听讲，小组讨论，阅读专业书以及和当地人交流，会需要一段时间去适应新的语言环境。
即便在中学时候英语很好，甚至不少学生高中有出国交流的经验，也会需要适应大学新的语言文化环境。每一个学生都要去适应，难易程度会和英语功底相关。基本来说，如果顺利通过了雅思考试，那么语言是可以跟的上的。所以进入大学前的预科学习是很重要的，这里面的语言课程不单纯是国内教授的雅思课程，而是孩子将要面临专业性的英语。
进入大学以后，学生可以根据自己的英语实力选择课程，总体而言，语言能力弱会有些吃力，但是下功夫也是可以补上的。
由于雅思考试没有什么指定的教材，所以选书很重要，首先一个，就是剑桥大学出版社出版的剑桥雅思真题集，从剑一到九全都要吃透。其次，好的雅思教材一定有它自己的特征。例如有位新航道学员就买了《第6代雅思考试口语教程》，它的编者是Mark Griffiths，外国人编英语书不稀奇，但注意看，这位先生不简单，他其实是现任的雅思考官。挑雅思教材的时候别忘了留意出版社。
各家培训机构都有自己的培训教材，其中不乏夸夸其谈吓唬人的，注意不要被那些天大的幌子遮了眼。所谓量体裁衣，各人有各人的情况，粗略来说高中生和大学生的词汇量就不一样，对语法、口语的掌握程度也不一样，往细了说还要看你自己的需求，要5.5分，还是6分，等等，一套书如果能让我们按自己的英语基础自由组合搭配，基础弱的多学几本，基础好的专攻薄弱环节，那就太完美啦。如果要练习雅思听力，在这里给大家推荐新航道的《雅思9分达人》系列图书，这本书实战意义很大。
